Welcome to our 12th
Appledore Visual Arts Festival, we invite you to share this unique and
exciting event with us. This section contains information about our
Advance-Booking workshops and events, these are always popular, so we advise
that you book early to be sure of a place.
In addition to the Advance-Booking workshops listed we will also be offering a
wide range of events including ; Exhibitions, Artist Residencies, Artist Talks,
Drop-In Workshops, Film Shorts and our famous Sunday afternoon Carnival Parade.
From early-March our Advance-Booking Leaflet will be available, for a copy
please send us your full mailing address or alternatively fill out this
form and post it to us with payment (cheque).
Apart from these specific Advance-Booking workshops all events are free to
children under 18. Adults will need to buy a Festival Pass (£3) this will
provide free access to all venues. There will also be a limited number of events
with an additional fee (adults only) such as our Artists Talks. The Festival is
run by Appledore Arts a not-for-profit charity, the monies collected from the
Festival Pass will contribute towards the costs of running this important and
unique Visual Arts Festival.
Masterclass
Gareth Mason : Ceramics Masterclass
This is a rare opportunity to take part in one of Gareth’s Masterclasses.
Through an interdisciplinary approach of demonstrations and hands on work
you will be taken through Gareth’s working practice as well having the
opportunity to develop your own skills and ideas. The two days will a
free-flowing exploration of creativity, with clay at its heart. We will
wheel throw, slab and hand build, exploring the textural and malleable
potential of each. We will find ways to intermix and meld these forming
techniques using process as a springboard for expression. There will be
plenty of discussion along the way. Everyone’s contribution will be
equally valid, as we never know where the learning will come from, or who
our teachers will be.

Children and Young People Advance-Booking Workshops
Noel Butler : Aboriginal Culture
This is a rare and unique opportunity to spend an afternoon with Noel
Butler an Australian Aborigine. Noel is an artist, storyteller, performer
and custodian of the stories and traditions of one of the world’s most
ancient cultures. Noel will teach you about his life and his culture
including painting, music making as well as stories about the earth,
landscape and animals of Australia’s vast wilderness areas. A once in a
lifetime opportunity !.
Location : Glove Factory Studio, Appledore
Date : Thursday May 28th from 1.30 pm – 5.30 pm

Exeter Phoenix : Film Animation Workshop
An experienced team from the Exeter Phoenix Media Department will be
running a day long film animation workshop. They have years of experience
in working on film animation workshops and together participants will
create their very own film animation. The final film will be uploaded on
to the Exeter Phoenix website after the Festival so that all participants
can see the results of their animation work !.

The Plough: The Dragon of Appledore
Nogard the dragon (and his fiery breath) was always in demand for lighting
candles, bonfires and bar-b-cues, helping hot air balloons get off the
ground, and keeping the wild beasts away, until one day his flame went out
- on the day of the town’s fire festival ! Help to create a play or take
part in creating Nogard the dragon and share them with your friends and
families in a performance at the end of one fun, active, creative and
original day.
Play-In-A-Day: You can spend the day working with Richard Wolfenden-Brown
from The Plough Arts Centre creating the story, inventing the characters
and taking part in the final performance.
Puppet Making: Or you can spend the day with John Roberts from PuppetCraft
creating shadow puppets including Nogard the dragon (a large willow
frame-work creature) who will take part in the final performance.
Just bring a mind full of ideas and get ready to work as a team through
drama, the only other thing you will need is a packed lunch and lots of
drinks.

John Ewington : Life Drawing
John is not only Appledore’s popular vicar, he is also an enthusiast of
drawing and will share his techniques. A model and materials are provided.

Mary Myers : Flaming Jewellery Workshop
Precious Metal Clay is an exciting new material which can be modelled and
fired leaving behind pure silver. By creating your own jewellery, you will
learn how to work with this fascinating material. At the end of the day
you will be able to take home your very own handmade solid silver pendant,

Almuth Tebenhoff : Fire & Fury Life Drawing !
Almuth is highly experienced artist, she has an ‘organic’ approach to life
drawing which enables you to explore and experience feelings, moods,
surroundings and sounds including music. With very slow and deliberate
movements a clothed model will build and tend a fire. You will spend the
day working both indoors and outdoors (weather dependent). Almuth will
guide you through a process of exploring and developing your drawing
practice. Please bring your own brushes others materials including paper
and inks will be provided.

Advance-Booking Workshops
Jenny Rose : Hooked Rug Workshop
Jenny is passionate about reclaiming skills and crafts. Hooked rugs are
functional, unique, beautiful and durable. Using recycled materials, she
will take you through the process of learning how to create your own rug.
This ancient craft can be learned by people of all ages, so sign up and
spend the day learning, creating and talking with your fellow ruggers !.

Double Elephant : Print Making Workshop
Join Double Elephant’s mobile print workshop and make your own fiery
prints !. Experiment with mark making using drypoint and explore with
colour, shape and texture using monoprint techniques. Suitable for adults
and children over 8 years old.

Joanna Scott : Lanterns
Joanna has worked as an artist for over 20 years. She will show you how to
make fiery sun lanterns which will glow with light. As dusk falls on
Saturday evening there we will be fire events, with paper kilns being set
a light and a fire installation as a finale. You are very welcome to bring
your lanterns along and joint in with the festivities. If you can’t make
the Saturday night, then come back again on Sunday afternoon and join in
our Carnival Parade instead !.

Rebecca Jeffries : African Dance Class
Rebecca is a dancer who grew up in Africa. Drawing on inspiration from our
theme of ‘Fire & Fury’ she will teach dance workshops based on this years
theme. All workshop participants are invited to dance in our Carnival
Parade to the beat of Energia the Samba Band !. The parade will start from
Appledore Quay on Sunday afternoon at 4.30 pm.

Performance
Beaford Arts : The Dragon’s Tale
The Dragon’s Tale is a family show by Hand To Mouth Theatre, it is for
anyone over 4 years of age. The puppet show is an original and whimsical
reinterpretation of George and the Dragon, told in a series of flashbacks
by the ageing dragon himself and his troupe of glove puppets. Musical
accompaniment is provided the equally weary Damsel in Distress playing
the hurdy-gurdy. Children will love the knockabout nonsense and adults
will appreciate the hidden layers about growing old together.
Location : Appledore Primary School
Time : 2.30 – 3.15 pm (45 minute show)
Price : £5 per child, £7 per adult and £22.50 for a family ticket (2 children
and 2 adults)
