HEATHER JANSCH - Know No Boundaries

Heather Jansch is famous for her stunning driftwood sculptures. Learn how she found new inspiration when driftwood became hard to find. Over two days spend sometime finding materials and then experience the thrill of making your own garden sculpture and landscapes from what is to hand in a beautiful garden with a wooded valley and stream at Shamland, Abbotsham, EX39 5BJ. Directions will be sent with booking confirmation

WARREN COLLUM - A Walk on the Wild Side

Warren is a highly experienced wildlife artist who also has an extensive knowledge of local flora and fauna. Spend two days with the wildlife on Braunton Burrows. By drawing from direct observation and visual note taking produce fresh, spontaneous work which captures the moment. A night session will focus around the Moth Trap for nocturnal insects. You can also explore the work of other wildlife artists and will need suitable clothing and a packed lunch. Further details including directions will be provided on booking.

MERLYN CHESTERMAN - The Woodcutter

Merlyn’s exquisite woodcuts are both delicate and powerful. Explore the potential of woodcuts with a visit to Northam Burrows as the starting point. Experiment with gouges and v-tools, learn how to sharpen them and produce print of several colours, using graded inks and printing by hand. Nothing is more exciting than seeing the cuts you have made become a printed image. You will go away with the skills to be able to work at home without costly equipment. Basic materials are included, with a range of papers and wood available to purchase. Beginners welcome !.

EXETER PHOENIX - Film Animation

If you are aged between eight and thirteen join an exciting film animation workshop run by a friendly, highly skilled team from the Exeter Phoenix Media Department. Don’t miss the chance to create your very own film animation. The final film will be uploaded on to the Exeter Phoenix website so that the whole world and your friends can see the results of your imagination and animation. How cool is that !.

MARK and PETER WARD – Shoreline Safari

A fantastic opportunity for all ages to combine scientific observation with artistic expression. Dr Mark Ward from the Field Studies Council is an expert in Marine Biology, he will take you on a journey to discover the wildlife to be found on Appledore’s beaches. Peter Ward, an artist and illustrator will encourage you to create your own artworks using found materials, sketching, mark making, collage and other techniques. You may spend all day working outdoors so bring appropriate clothing and footware. Don’t miss out !.

DAVE GREEN - Who Needs a Camera?

Experience the wonder of watching images appear on the paper, create the most amazing daylight prints, photograms and pin-hole photographs from seaweed and other objects from the beach. And all of this without a camera !. Some images will be made entirely on the beach by a long exposure to light throughout the day. Explore contact printing onto photographic paper and the absolute magic of constructing and using a pin-hole camera.

HELENA GODDARD – The Paper Maker

Helena explores and develops the richness and variety of papermaking in many of her own pieces of work. Create a book of the Appledore coastline using a range of techniques including pulp-making, embossing, casting, trapping, laminating and stitching. Objects found along the coastline will be provided or you can bring your own. Having created the pages and cover, compile and bind them into a unique record of your time in Appledore. Your very won book from cover to cover !.

DAN The FISHMAN – Fun With Fish

The whole family can explore Dan’s passion for fish. Get a behind the scenes tour of the new Appledore Fish Dock, learn how to identify and fillet your own fish and wet your appetite for lunch with a taster session of some locally caught seafood. You know its good for you so bring your own apron and have fund with fish !. No unaccompanied children under 16.

HEATHER JANSCH – A Life in the Year of Heather Jansch

A born sculptor, irrepressible storyteller and famous for her work with driftwood, Heather will delight you with her talk. Learn how she found new inspiration by adapting to circumstances when driftwood became hard to find and she needed a change. Beginning in Italy her journey came back to Dartmoor and passed miles of empty shorelines before ending in the cold November rain of suburban wasteland where, still empty handed, she was confronted by disheartening mounds of discarded and unloved rejects when at last inspiration struck. She will be signing copies of her beautifully illustrated book ‘Heather Jansch’s Diary A life in The Year of …. “

SAM SMILES – ART HISTORY of NORTH DEVON’S COAST

Sam Smiles is Professor of Art History at the University of Plymouth. For over 200 years visitors have been inspired by the landscapes found on the coast, by its people and its way of life. Sam will explore artistic responses to the landscape between Tintagel and Watchet from the late eighteenth century when it was a remote spot with very poor communications, through its development as a tourist destination in the nineteenth century and beyond. Artists who investigated the area include Thomas Girtin, JMW Turner, Samuel Palmer and David Bomberg. Their varied responses reveal how artistic developments affected their approach to the coast

MARTIN ROWSON – THE POWER OF THE POLITICAL CARTOON

Controversial political cartoonist Martin Rowson sees himself as neither a comic illustrator nor an artist, but says "I'm a visual journalist, I use humour to make a journalistic point." He will discuss his career as a full-time, free-lance cartoonist whose work appears regularly in The Guardian, The Mirror, The Scotsman, Time Out, The Times Education Supplement, The Irish Times, The Independent on Sunday and Tribune. In 2000 and 2005 he was voted Political Cartoonist of the Year. Martin will give a challenging and provocative talk about the origins of cartoons and caricatures and why they continue to be so important in influencing political culture and public opinion. His provocative work follows the tradition of eighteenth-century satirists and cartoonists such as Gillray. The Presentation will contain strong language and images which some people might find offensive.

KATE PAXMAN – Bucks Mills Artists Residency

Kate is the first artist in residence at Bucks Mills Cabin now owned by the National Trust. From 1913 to 1965 the Cabin was used as an artists’ studio by Judith Ackland and Mary Stella Edwards whose watercolours, drawings and dioramas are in The Burton Art Gallery & Museum. The National Trust plan to continue the unique artistic heritage of the Cabin and Kate will discuss how she re-visited the scenes that they depicted and then used these locations to create her own contemporary responses through drawings, photography and film.

WREN MUSIC – Marilyn Tucker & Paul Wilson ‘On The Tide’

Marilyn Tucker & Paul Wilson are renowned for their strong vocal harmonies and instrumental variety. Their latest CD On The Tide (Wren CD014) is inspired mainly by the relationship between Devon (and the west-country) and Newfoundland. Their wide repertoire of traditional songs and tunes (including many from Devon's rich cultural history) is complemented by a wealth of new songs and original compositions. In their thirty years of professional experience, they have performed at a staggering number and variety of venues, from Ewan MacColl's 70th Birthday at London's Festival Hall, to a small-hall concert for a fishing co-op on the shores of Newfoundland, always finding the right songs for each occasion. Their busy schedule has included village touring projects around England, folk clubs, festivals and concerts, TV and radio work.
