APPLEDORE VISUAL ARTS FESTIVAL 2010
June 3rd – 6th

CALL FOR ARTISTS

Festival : Twelve years ago Appledore Arts initiated the UK’s first annual Visual Arts Festival which has subsequently influenced and inspired many other festivals nationwide. The four day Appledore Visual Arts Festival offers high quality and original programming in a beautiful and historic estuary setting. Our patron is Lord David Puttnam. With an audience of over 7,500, the Festival is recognized as a major high quality arts event with an established regional profile and a rapidly growing national profile.

Each year we facilitate the production and exhibition of work from nationally and internationally recognised artists including Richard Long and Peter Randall-Page. The Festival also showcases young emerging talent alongside a wealth of local visual arts practitioners. The high quality of our programming is reflected in funding support from Arts Council England, South West.

Our vision is to support, promote and advance the visual arts in the South West. Artists are heavily involved in the inception and development of programming. Our objective is to offer an innovative, exciting and diverse range of experiences and activities for all age groups including children and young people. The Festival runs for four days, in 2010 the dates are Thursday June 3rd to Sunday June 6th. It is held during summer half-term and attracts a wide range of visitors from the local region as well as visitors from all over the UK.

Theme : Our relationship with the sea has profoundly influenced our history, our identity and our character. There is no finer example of this relationship than North Devon’s beautiful and rugged coastline. Through an innovative programme of contemporary visual arts events, selected artists will be asked to respond to this unique environment.

“ From the broken, contorted rocks of Hartland to the vast sand-dunes of Braunton Burrows, and the towering cliffs of Exmoor, the North Devon coastline is breathtaking. Wild, windswept uplands and shattered cliffs pounded by the Atlantic waves contrast with sweeping bays filled with golden sand and massive, plunging cliffs clothed in a green carpet of dense woodland. ”
Along The Shore, Mike Towns
