Oral History Project : Appledore’s Maritime
Heritage
We have now filmed many interviews with local people who have many
different memories about Appledore:
Vernon Harris has spoken about his experiences as a River Pilot and
Harbour Master.
Anne Wells (Ford) has spoken very amusingly about her time out fishing
with her father, as well as the knitting of the Appledore Frocks and making rope
mats.
Josie Sims also has many memories of being taught by her mother to knit
the traditional fishermens Frock and also about life growing up in Appledore.
John Bowden (Chuckwood) has recalled his times as a youngster with the
Boys Brigade and the Football Team as well as his experiences of catching
Salmon.
Alison Boyle can perfectly recall the making of replicas in her fathers
shipyard.
Ron Slade talks about the smell of the wood from the boatyards along
Irsha Street and the rivalry between West and Point, as well as showing a salmon
boat he is renovating with skills he learnt in the boatyards.
Bartle Lesslie tells us about the many years he spent in the drawing
office of the shipyard, and the different ships he worked on.
There are many, many different tales being told, and they all recall a time in
Appledore which has disappeared, and is now only in people’s memories.
Filming will be continuing until early 2008. A Primer Film showing some of the
interviews so far will be shown publicly in September. The finished film
archived in all local libraries, museums and Study Centres to ensure that there
is easy access for anyone who wishes to see it.
It is really important that we capture as many of these memories as we can,
before they disappear forever. This way we can leave a lasting legacy for future
generations to understand what it used to be like to live and work in Appledore.
